TIGNES GLACIER CLOSES FOR SUMMER SKIING - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor
Saturday July 27, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The heatwave & hot temperatures have taken their toll. With deteriorating conditions the resort has pulled the plug on summer snowsports.

The Grande Motte glacier has been slowly melting this summer and with poor conditions the resort has reluctantly announced that skiing is over.

It will re-start in the autumn with a planned date of September 28th.

"The glacier has been subjected to high temperatures since the beginning of the summer season, and we are no longer able to operate the slopes in good conditions," said the Grande Motte Cable Car Company.

"Between the heat and the episodes of heat wave, we have no more snow to work. Cracks are formed and it has become dangerous," it added.

Here is what it looks like:

The closure has never been so early in the season.

Some of the lifts will continue to run for hikers, climbers and mountain bikers.

The glacier opened on June 22nd as we reported at the time on PlanetSKI.

The heat is affecting other glacier ski areas in the Alps.

Les2Alpes, in the southern French Alps, is now the only other glacier resort in France offering lift-accessed summer skiing and snowboarding.

It remains open, but conditions are deteriorating.

"What is penalising is that at 3AM  it is still 9 degrees with a significant humidity, which penalizes the refreeze," said Arnaud Guérrand, head of snow operations at the resort.

Last Tuesday the summer temperature record was broken with 19.8 degrees at 3,200 meters.

The previous record was 17 degrees, that was reached back in 2003.

Conditions are slightly better in Zermatt/Cervinia and in Austria where there were high snow levels in the winter.

We will be posting an updated report on conditions later so do check back.

In the meantime check out our earlier report on where it is possible to ski in the summer months across the world:

If you are able then the best current skiing is in Australia and South America:
