Winter holidays above the Arctic Circle in Lapland for skiers

Lapland in winter is a magical experience.

It's a remote, untamed wilderness blanketed in snow from December to May.

Inghams offers three very different resorts:

Levi is Inghams' most popular ski resort - it has modern infrastructure with an impressive range of accommodation, restaurants and cosy bars.

Levi has hosted World Cup ski events on its uncrowded, snow-sure pistes but it's really a brilliant place for families to try skiing for the first time.

Trips to Levi cost from £519pp

Yllas boasts Finland's longest ski slopes, as well as an excellent network of cross-country trails.

Ylläs is an idyllic unspoiled Lappish village with amazing scenery and high-quality cosy log cabins dotted around the woods.

Äkäs Hotel is the main focus of entertainment but there is also a handful of colourful local bars and restaurants and an excellent large supermarket.

Holidays to Yllas cost from £479pp.

Saariselkä is located in the wild mystical north of Lapland, close to Russia and just a few hours from the Arctic Ocean.

It is an exceptionally friendly, uncommercialised resort with a unique frontier atmosphere and magnificent cross-country skiing.

Saariselkä holidays cost from £479pp.

You don't have to ski or safari in Lapland, though.

Strap on some snow shoes and go for walks, or perhaps just lie inside in a warm glass igloo waiting for the Northern Lights to dance across the sky at night.

For the littler ones

If you book a 7-night holiday to Lapland in December you can also visit Santa in his Hideaway.

If you purchase the 'Santa's Hideaway' excursion at the time of booking, the whole family can meet Santa and spend an afternoon creating Christmas decorations with the Elves and baking gingerbread.

What's more, every holiday to Lapland in December includes a farewell dinner with Santa and his reindeer - there's even a small gift and certificate for every child.

Of course with the chance to enjoy any of the Big 3 safaris by reindeer, snowmobile or husky through the snow-laden woods.

It's the perfect family getaway for the festive season.
