THE ALPINE VILLAGE WITH 1M VISITORS - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Monday August 5, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Imagine an alpine village with just 800 inhabitants that's visited by a million tourists a year. That's Hallstatt in Austria.

The village, to the north of the ski resort of Schladming, is so picturesque that the Chinese have even created an exact replica of it in Guangdong Province.

And it's largely Chinese visitors who flock to the place in their coachloads every year.

The village is said to be the oldest in Austria and is a World Heritage site.

It sits between the edge of Hallstätter See and the towering Dachstein mountains on the road between Salzburg and Graz.

It is possibly the most photographed place in the country, regularly appearing in social media posts.

Hallstatt's Mayor, Alexander Schentz, has told the BBC that the popularity of his small village has provided an economic boost.

"We used to be a place that people left," he said.

"We couldn't balance our budget.

"But that's changed. Now we can develop our own projects and offer a lot to our population."

Not everyone agrees, it seems.

Some locals are fed up with the tourists swarming the place for a couple of hours and then disappearing.

Mayor Schentz first heard about plans to build a replica of Hallstatt in 2011 when construction was well under way.

He visited the Chinese Hallstatt in Luoyang for the official opening ceremony in 2012 and signed an agreement for a cultural exchange.

The Chinese version - complete with a copy of the parish church and fountain - was built by the China Minmetals mining company and is one of a number of replica European villages, towns and landmarks in the country.

But Hallstatt is believed to be one of only two locations that has been copied in full.

The other is Venice. which has been recreated in Dalian province.

It is said to freeze over in winter.
