MADI DROPPED BY SPONSOR - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Friday August 9, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

After her life-threatening blood clot, GB freeskier Madi Rowlands has suffered another setback. She's lost her main clothing sponsor. UPDATED

The news that Picture has dropped Madi is a big blow for the 19-year-old from Kent.

The company was her outerwear and clothing sponsor.

The news comes as the former Youth Winter Olympic halfpipe champion and slopestyle bronze medallist continues her recovery from a rare clot on the brain.

It was diagnosed by a CT scan after she'd had a severe migraine for four days, as we reported on PlanetSKI:

After our coverage on PlanetSKI her illness has since been featured on the BBC news website, BBC South East TV and in a national newspaper.

Madi was forced to cancel two summer training camps with the GB Park & Pipe squad in Austria and New Zealand.

She is unable to ski while she is being treated with blood-thinning drugs as a fall could prove fatal.

It's not known when she'll be able to return to training and competition.

Now, in a further setback, Picture has told her the company will no longer support her.

It's a ruthless world as companies focus on their, so-called, 'brand image'.

"The reasons given were that they are changing marketing strategy and want to concentrate on riders who give quality content around adventure and exploration rather than competition in line with their environmental commitments, and Madi no longer fits in with that," Madi's dad, Daran has told PlanetSKI.

Though Madi has other sponsors and gets a small amount of UK lottery funding, it's a big disappointment for her.

Like most snowsports athletes, Madi relies on the support of her sponsors to help her and her family offset the high costs of representing Great Britain on the World Cup stage.

Madi's older brother Mike is also in the GB Park & Pipe ski team.

He receives no funding, so it's a constant struggle for the Rowlands family.

Madi has been recuperating with her family in Les2Alpes this summer.

She says she's thankful to be alive.

"She's doing well," dad Daran tells us.

At least that's one bit of very good news.
