SCANDINAVIAN SKIING JUST GOT EASIER

A direct flight from London to a new mountain airport will reduce travel times to the biggest resorts in Sweden & Norway next winter.

The opening of the Scandinavian Mountains Airport will cut transfer times to just 10 minutes to Hundfjället, the closest skiing area in Sälen in Sweden, and 40 minutes to Trysil in Norway.

SAS will start flying to the airport, which is on the Swedish side of the border, from Heathrow on 28th December.

With a flight time of two hours, British skiers and snowboarders can be in resort far quicker than has been the case in the past.

It could further boost the region's appeal with Brits - at least those living in southern England.

The evidence suggests that the ski areas of Norway and Sweden are becoming more popular.

The 2019 edition of the respected International Report on Mountain & Snow Tourism said Scandinavia was the only region in Europe which has more skiers and snowboarders visiting now than it did 10 years ago:
"We are delighted that SAS is able to offer the first international flights to the new airport," Karl Sandlund, the airline's Executive Vice President Commercial, said.

"Short journey times, attractive timetables, combined with fantastic opportunities for skiing and other winter activities in the Swedish and Norwegian mountains are what a lot of people are looking for."

Sälen and Trysil are the largest ski resorts in Scandinavia.

According to SkiStar, the company that owns both ski areas, they are growing in popularity with international skiers looking for an alternative to the busy slopes of the Alps.

"We've already seen a year-on-year booking increase of 23% from the UK to our ski resorts in Norway and Sweden, so it's extremely exciting to be able to offer a direct route from London to Sälen and Trysil," Mathias Lindström, Sales and Marketing Director at SkiStar, said.

The completion of Scandinavian Mountains Airport comes as more money is pumped into the resorts.

More than £86 million is being invested in Hundfjället and Tandålen in Sälen.

The new flight will run on Saturdays throughout the ski season, starting on December 28th 2019.
