SNOW IN SOUTH AMERICA - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor

It hasn't been a memorable winter for snow so far. There's been scant natural snowfall but the cannons have come to help.

This year it has snowed just three times in the Chilean Andes.

Weather experts say in recent years the amount of snow that has fallen has reduced by 10% each decade.

There has been an investment in making artificial snow making, plus better fencing and snow management.

"All the ski centers in the central zone are without natural snow. However, thanks to the fabrication of snow we've been able to keep open pistes that without this fabrication would not have been able to stay open," said the operations director at Andacor, Fernando Montenegro, to the newsagency AFP.

Andacor operates the El Colorado and Parque Farellones ski stations.

El Colorado has already invested almost $4 million in snow cannons and plans to spend another $10m in coming years.

The cat skiing operation Ski Arpa has been unable to open for the winter due to poor snow.

The Swiss Ski Team has cancelled its summer training camp in Chile and will be training on the glaciers of Saas Fee and Zermatt instead.

We have reported earlier on the poor snow in Chile this season:
Perhaps the best know resort in Chile is Portillo that is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.

It has 60% of its lifts working.

It opened at the end of June with optimism in the air:
The snow cannons have been helping things along in Portillo too.

In Cerro Catedrale the conditions are much better.

The resort has 30 of its 38 runs open.
