NEW SLEEPER TRAIN TO TIROL SKI RESORTS - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Wednesday September 18, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

It will take you to the foot of many of Austria's best resorts this winter and help you slash your carbon footprint.

It's not a direct journey from the UK but skiers and snowboarders can take the Eurostar to Amsterdam and catch the Alpen Express sleeper from there.

Or, if you don't mind the extra change, you can travel from London to Brussels on Eurostar, pick up the ICE train to Cologne and board the Alpen Express there.

It's not the quickest way to get to your ski destination but -  in our view - train travel is the best, as well as being better for the planet.

The overnight journey will not only help boost your green credentials but give you two extra days on the slopes.

"The Alpen Express has a variety of quality couchette accommodation and a bar-disco on board," says Daniel Elkan, founder of the independent rail-ski guide Snowcarbon.

"It's a fantastic way to reach superb Tirolean ski terrain and a real step forward for sustainable travel to the slopes; making the journey part of the holiday".

Among its stops are the Tirol resorts of St Anton, Westendorf, Kitzbühel, St Johann in Tirol, Zell am See and Fieberbrunn, as well as the Tirolean capital of Innsbruck.

Return fares start from £239 per person.

The news follows the launch of Ski Flight Free, a campaign to encourage skiers to travel to the Alps without flying.

The goal of the not-for-profit independent campaign is to try to reduce CO2 emissions by skiers travelling to resorts.

You can get more information on the Alpen Express, its destinations and the full timetable on the Snow Carbon website.
