SKI SLOPE ON A WASTE TO ENERGY PLANT OPENS
Monday October 7, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The slope is on the roof of a waste incineration plant in Copenhagen. PlanetSKI reports.

It has a 450m ski slope and there's even a bit of après ski at the bottom.

In all there is 9,000 square metres of slope and it includes an Olympic half-pipe, a freestyle park and a timed slalom course.

The power plant burns waste, rather than fossil fuel, to create energy.

The $670m waste-to-energy plant began operating in 2017 and has leased its roof to an independent company that runs the skiing side of things.

We have reported on the project in the past on PlanetSKI:

"The ski slope idea came from realising that Copenhagen has a cold climate with several months of snow, but absolutely no mountains," said the architect, Bjarke Ingels.

"Suddenly sustainability actually becomes the more fun, the more enjoyable alternative to what we know," he added.

The building also has a green forest area, a hiking trail, and climbing walls.

Skiers can also see the energy plant's 24-hour operations.

Around 50-60,000 skiers are expected each year.

"You can go skiing in your backyard. Not a lot of people can do that in a city," said one local.

CopenHill converts around 440,000 tons of waste every year into enough clean energy that can provide electricity and heat for 150,000 homes.

It is situated on the industrial waterfront of Amager where there is already wake-boarding and go-kart racing

Copenhagen has a mission of becoming the world's first carbon-neutral city by 2025.
