Balkan Holidays expands its ‘City and Ski' option with time in Sofia after skiing its surrounding ski areas.

Sofia is Bulgaria's bustling, cosmopolitan capital and is a compact and characterful place.

It is young, lively and appealing, with numerous bars and cafes.

Churches, treasure-filled museums, art galleries and leafy parks could keep visitors busy for a week.

Once checked out of their ski resort, Balkan Holidays guests will be driven the couple of hours by coach to Sofia, and a guide will offer an escorted tour.

There's free time to do some last-minute shopping, before the coach returns, guests are reunited with their luggage and the return flight home takes off.

Top tips for a short time in Sofia are:

• A coffee at one of the cafes in and around the City Garden

• Royal Palace for the Bulgarian folk art inside

• Aleksander Nevski Memorial Church with the Aleksander Nevski Crypt to see the impressive Museum of Icons.

• A traditional Bulgarian meal

"We are delighted to offer the chance to soak up some Bulgarian history and culture after a week on the slopes, and expect this to be an ever-more popular optional extra this Winter," said the Head of Marketing for Balkan Holidays, Louise Newton.

The ‘Sofia See-Off Tour' is booked and paid for in resort, from £9 per child and from £12.50 per adult.

The excursion departs 9am (Bansko) and 10.15am (Borovets) but is not available from the resort of Pamporovo.
