Vail and Steamboat in Colorado are opening this Friday as a host of ski areas in North America gear up for the season. UPDATED

Vail is the latest to announce it's getting going, with 70 acres of terrain ready for skiing.

The open area will be accessed from Gondola One in Vail Village.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to kick off the 2019-2020 winter season at Vail on Friday," said Vail Mountain vice president and chief operating officer Beth Howard.

"Thanks to our enormous snowmaking expansion project, we have an entirely new early season terrain package available this year, and we can't wait for our guests to experience the difference.

"I'd like to extend a huge thank you to our mountain operations teams for their hard work this summer and fall to make it all possible."

Steamboat is opening earlier than it has ever done in its history.

It has had more than 160cm of snow already.

It will join the growing list of American ski areas getting its season going ahead of schedule.

The resort began life in 1963 and has never opened this early before.

The official opening celebrations begin at 7.30am this Friday, 15th November.

The Christie Peak Express lift will open for skiers and snowboarders at 8.30am.

Ten trails will be open.

“Free Smartwool socks will be given to the first 100 snow enthusiasts on the mountain along with delicious breakfast burritos,” the resort has announced.

Just over a week later, on Saturday 23rd November, Steamboat’s new high speed gondola will be unveiled amid more celebrations and freebies.

Steamboat is on the Ikon Pass, a season pass which covers  41 destinations across North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Chile.

Meanwhile two already-open Colorado resorts, Keystone and Breckenridge, have announced that they will be opening additional runs this weekend (Saturday 16th).

Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe, California, also opens today, Friday 15th November, while Mammoth Mountain opened last weekend.

The California resort only closed for last 'winter' at the end of July.

The runs open are Broadway, Silver Tip, Andy's Double Gold, Rusty's and a terrain park on Upper Broadway.

The lifts are operating from 8.30am to 4pm every day and more terrain will open when conditions allow.

We've been sent these pictures from the resort of the opening weekend.

Between them the resorts have almost 8,000 acres of skiing, 2 gondolas, 26 chairlifts and 10m of snow each season on average.

Sunshine has the longest non-glacial ski season in Canada from early November until late May.

The resorts are destination partner resorts for the Ikon Pass.
