RYDING CRASHES OUT ON 2ND RUN - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Friday November 22, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

GB's top alpine racer Dave Ryding was lying in second place in the opening slalom of the season. Sadly it was not to be.

The Rocket was 14th out of the the starting gates for run one at Levi in Finnish Lapland.

He had a storming race, leaving him in second place behind the man who many think could be the natural successor to Marcel Hirscher, 22-year-old Clement Noel of France.

Could our man get the first World Cup win of his career?

He was the fastest racer on the top section of the 65-gate course but lost some time lower down.

As in run one it was looking good at the top but it was not to be.

Not this time.

Ryding went down.

No podium, no points.

The race was live on Eurosport.

It was an echo of Ryding's race in Levi two seasons ago.

Then he was in the lead after the first run before crashing out on the second.

Dave reacted afterwards on Facebook.

The 2019 race was won by the Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen, who moved up from fourth to top the podium.

The early leader, Clement Noel of France, was second with Switzerland's Daniel Yule third.

Levi, deep inside the Arctic Circle, traditionally hosts the first World Cup slalom races of the northern hemisphere winter.

Awaiting the winners of the men's and women's races is the traditional prize: a reindeer.

Ryding, who turns 33 in December, is Great Britain's most successful ever alpine racer.

He has been on the World Cup podium twice but has never stood on the top.

Could this be his season?

One of his main rivals has gone.

The great Austrian, Marcel Hirscher, has retired.

But Ryding will have plenty of competition throughout the winter season.

It could come in the form of Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen, Clement Noel or Alexis Pinturault of France or Manu Feller of Austria.

Ryding finished 12th in Levi a year ago.

His best result there is 6th in 2016, at the start of the season during which he went on to take that historic silver medal at Kitzbuehel.

In our article back in April, Ryding, gave his own assessment of his 2018-19 season:

He gave an interview to Eurosport ahead of the race in Levi and also to BBC Sport.

Ryding was joined in Levi by team mate Laurie Taylor, who clocked up some impressive results last season.

Taylor failed to finish the first run.

There was also British involvement in the women's race on Saturday.

Charlie Guest was the only female GB Snowsport athlete competing at Levi.

She failed to finish the first run.

Dave Ryding will next be in action in Val d'Isere in France on Sunday 15th December.
