Scottish Spring Clean
Thursday June 17, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

This weekend Cairngorm and The Nevis Range get a wash and brush up. Volunteers will be out picking up litter on Sunday. They often find some odd items.

Last year saw 150 people take part in the event with over 50 bags of rubbish collected from the hillside.

Given the record-breaking number of people that have been skiing and snowboarding this winter in Scotland there could be considerably more.

Last Spring there was hundreds of cigarette butts, a ski boot, a plastic sledge, broken ski poles, plastic bottles, cans and a bin lid.

The surprise find though was a Marathon chocolate bar wrapper dating from 1990, before the snack was re-branded as Snickers.

It is a good illustration of how long litter remains.

The Spring Clean is now in its 3rd year and is organised by the Ski Club of Great Britain in conjunction with the resorts.

It is now part of a wider campaign taking places across resorts in Europe with 140 different events taking place.

"It's a great way to raise awareness about the damaging effect of litter on the environment. It fits closely with our Environmental Policy which encourages visitors from all walks of life to enjoy the mountain experience in both summer and winter while minimising the impact on the landscape," said Marian Austin from the Nevis Range.

Volunteers are asked to meet at 10am at the bottom of the gondola at Nevis Range.

Gloves and bags are provided for all litter pickers and for everyone who brings back a bag of litter, tea and cakes will be provided.

Over at Cairngorm volunteers are asked to assemble at the Ranger base at Coire Cas at 10.00am.

We will have a report on PlanetSKI of how it all goes and what odd items were found on Sunday.

There is even the chance to do a bit of skiing as the resort is opening up a very small area on both Sunday and Monday, as we report within this story.
