Club Med opens in Chinese ski resort
Tuesday February 15, 2011 - Email this article to a friend

The operator is offering holidays in Yabuli's Sun Mountain resort in Heilongjiang Province. The resort has recently undergone a multi-million dollar renovation.

China has many ski resorts but none quite as upmarket as Sun Mountain.

The lift system, rental shops and accommodation have all been upgraded in recent years and now Club Med has taken over the main hotel next to the lift station.

The resort has 17 runs and most of the visitors are from the nearby towns and cities rather than overseas.

It is 1,000km north of Beijing.

The news has just been reported by the BBC as one of its reporters has visited the ski resort.

Here on PlanetSKI reported on the development of the resort back in 2009.

Skiing and snowboarding in China is on the increase as the country becomes wealthier.

"People are getting richer and we think the next step is that people, instead of only possessing luxury goods, will want to also enjoy new experiences," says Club Med's Asia-Pacific Managing Director, Olivier Horps.

The BBC reports that in 2000 there were 200,000 skiers according to the China Ski Association.

In 2005 this figure apparently went up to 5 million.

One prediction says that by 2014 there will be 20 million people taking to the slopes.

Meanwhile here's a video made in 2009 of Sun Mountain to give you a feel of skiing in China.
