Mums on the booze

Drinking in moderation is good for you, so if you enjoy a bit of après ski then carry on. That is the good news from a new study looking at the habits of women's drinking.

Little and often is apparently beneficial according to a US study that looked at the drinking habits and health of 14,000 women.

Compared with non-drinkers, women in their mid-50s who drank one or two drinks a day had a 28% better chance of "successful ageing". That means general good health and free from cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Spreading consumption over the week is better than just saving it for the weekend.

It is reported in The PloS Medicine journal.

Apparently women who have a drink 5 to 7 days of the week have nearly twice as much chance of good health in old age compared to those who prefer to remain tea-total.

So, if you are one of the growing number of women who are getting their own after years of their husband's or partner's golf trips and heading off for a holiday with your girlfriends this coming season then you can now enjoy some après ski guilt free - just don't overdo it is the message from the researchers.

The British Heart Foundation has welcomed the news but stresses that women should drink within moderation.

Health experts also recommend a healthy balanced diet and plenty of exercise - all things you can do on a ski holiday.
