Battle for the skies
Monday May 14, 2012 - Email this article to a friend

Monarch Airlines has announced 10 new routes to ski areas for next winter. It marks a significant increase as the airline targets the ski market. New routes are also offered by Jet2Ski as the batlle for our business steps up a gear.

The new ski routes from Monarch are to Grenoble in France and Friedrichshafen and Munich airports in Germany.

Munich flights will launch in mid-September with flights to Grenoble and Friedrichshafen starting in mid-December and they will run until the Easter holidays in early April, 2013.

Friedrichshafen was a Ryanair destination before the airline cut the route.

With routes into the Italian cities of Milan, Venice and Verona it gives the airline a greater spread of flights to ski resorts across the Alps.

"The launch of these routes for winter 2012/13 marks an exciting new era for Monarch as we introduce our first programme of scheduled ski flights and target a new customer base of skiers looking to fly to Grenoble, Friedrichshafen, Munich as well as via our numerous Italian destinations," said the  Managing Director of Monarch Airlines, Kevin George.

"The network will also be further strengthened by the addition of services from Leeds Bradford International Airport which will be launching this winter, and we are delighted to be able to bring our high levels of care and service to customers travelling from West Yorkshire in the future."

The new routes include flights from Leeds Bradford International Airport for the first time that will fly to Grenoble and Munich.

The airline is clearly trying to extend its competition with Jet2ski, easyJet and Ryanair for the people in the ski market who travel independently.

BA, SWISS and the other national carriers will be offering competitive schedules and prices too for next winter.

It seems the air battle for our business is hotting up.

Jet2ski has just added more routes for next winter as well.

There are 4 new routes. It will fly to Grenoble from Manchester Airport and Leeds Bradford Airport and to Chambery and Geneva from East Midlands Airport.

"Our ski flights are becoming increasing popular, especially with Manchester and Yorkshire passengers, which is why we decided to add Grenoble to our growing portfolio of top European ski destinations from these two bases," said the Chief Commercial Officer for Jet2Ski, Steve Heapy.

We take pride in being a ski friendly airline providing unrivalled access to Europe's finest ski resorts. Our great range of destinations, combined with our generous 22kg baggage allowance plus morning flight times - meaning people can hit the slopes as soon as they arrive - undoubtedly makes us the number one choice for ski fans."
