Swiss solar plane
Wednesday June 6, 2012 - Email this article to a friend

A plane run entirely on solar energy has flown from Spain to Morocco. It started its journey in The Swiss Alps. One day it is hoped the solar plane will fly around the world. We also have video of a Swiss jet man in training over the Alps

The solar plane is the size of a jumbo jet, weighs the same as a car but looks more like a dragonfly.

It has 12,000 solar cells on its body that powers the four electrical motors.

The Solar Implulse is piloted by the Swiss aviator, Bertrand Piccard, and we have reported on his exploits previously on PlanetSKI.

His friend and colleague, Andre Boschberg, flew the first leg of the journey from Switzerland to Madrid at the end of last month.

The two-leg journey from Europe to Africa trip covered 2,500 kms.

There is now talk of a round the world journey.

The plane is made of carbon fibre.

There are no commercial plans for it at the moment the creators hope new technological developments could alter that and solar energy for flight will have wider applications.

Looks good on the drawing board

After a 19hour flight here it is coming in to land at Morocco's Rabat-Salé International Airport.

In a separate development another Swiss aviator has been making the headlines. Though Yves Rossy is it the other end of the scale as he flies fast over the Alps in a jet wing suit.

He needs a bit more than the rays of the sun to stay airborn.

He has just posted a video of training over the Swiss Alps - it is quite a sight.

Recently he flew in his jet wing suit over Rio de Janiero as we reported in this story on PlanetSKI.

It contains another stunning video.

For the spirit of the mountains
