Teenager climbs Mont Blanc for Orangutans
Tuesday July 10, 2012 - Email this article to a friend

A 16 year old British boy, Alex Staniforth, is already the youngest person to complete the National 3 Peaks Challenge solo and is also carrying the Olympic torch ahead of London 2012. Next up is the highest mountain in the Alps. For Orangutans.

Mont Blanc is 4,810m and though as much a high alpine hike as a climb it is a serious endeavour.

Alex aims to raise a pound for every metre climbed and the money will go to Cancer Research UK and the Red Endangered Animal Connection Trust (REACT) that helps protect Orangutans in Borneo.

He plans to wear an Orangutan costume when he reaches the summit.

Last year Alex Staniforth, from Kelsall in Cheshire, became the youngest person to reach the summits of the UK's tallest mountains; Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon; in less than 24 hours.

He achieved the feat during the National Three Peaks Challenge.

So why is he supporting Orangutans?

Orang-utans are particularly susceptible to unsustainable human development as they depend on fertile lowland forests which are perfect for agriculture, and they reproduce  very slowly; once every 8 years on average.

This has led to a serious decline in numbers over the last 60 years and they are now classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as endangered in Borneo, and critically endangered in Sumatra.

Logging, palm oil and forest fires continue to destroy their habitat so conservation efforts are critical.

"I believe that there is a beautiful and diverse, natural world out there, and it is our responsibility to protect it.  We need to take action to quickly reverse this mindless damage before it is too late and I think that I need to be part of the solution.  Thanks to REACT, I can be sure that the money I fundraise is well spent and goes to save orang-utans and their habitat," said Alex.

After Mont Blanc Alex plans to cycle from  John O'Groats- Land's End  in 11 days in August.

Next  year he intends to climb Mera Peak (6400m) in the Himalayas, and Everest is his ultimate goal.
