Monarch offers free ski carriage
Sunday October 21, 2012 - Email this article to a friend

Skis and snowboards can be carried free of charge on the new routes of Monarch Airlines to the Alps. Passengers need to book before 31st December 2012.

Monarch's new routes are to Grenoble in France, Innsbruck in Austria and Friedrichshafen and Munich airports in Germany.

The airline normally charges £39.98 for snowsports equipment for a return journey.

The airline is making a concerted effort to tap into the ski market with a large promotional and PR marketing campaign this winter.

"The launch of these ski routes for winter 2012/13 marks an exciting new era for Monarch," said Kevin George, Managing Director of Monarch Airlines. "The introduction of our first scheduled ski programme comes in response to customer demand. More and more people are booking all elements of their ski holidays separately now and at Monarch we can provide them with the facilities to book scheduled flights and enhance their overall holiday experience with our vast range of add-ons and optional choices."

There is no doubt that charges for snowsports equipment is a constant grumble for skiers and snowboarders.

SWISS is the only major carrier to offer it for free and many people are now simply renting their equipment in the resort rather than paying the hefty baggage fees.

One of the major rental companies, Intersport Ski Rental, has just launched a special calculator so people can work out how much they may save to rent rather carry out their own equipment. It can cost as much as £120 return for one person and the new calculator allows you to check.

Monarch is also teaming up with Britain's No 1 female alpine skier, Chemmy Alcott.

The relationship between Chemmy Alcott and Monarch will see her wearing the airline's brand in all her competition and practice sessions.

"As Britain's leading skier, we are proud to have Chemmy Alcott associated with Monarch as we launch our new scheduled ski routes for this winter. Chemmy will inspire both experienced and novice skiers to take to the slopes," said a spokesperson for the airline.
