Kenton Cool summits 3 Himalayan peaks in 3 days
Monday May 20, 2013 - Email this article to a friend

Nuptse, Everest and now Lhotse have been climbed by the British mountaineer. He and his sherpa climbing partner are the first people to do so in a single trip. He has now climbed Everest 11 times breaking his own record. The pair has now left Base Camp.

Kenton Cool made the announcement via Facebook a 2.40pm on Monday afternoon.

"KC Update: LHOTSE HAS BEEN SUMMITED. DESCENT HARD. NOW AT CAMP 2 FOR THE NIGHT. THREE SUMMITS IN THREE DAYS. NUPTSE, EVEREST, LHOTSE. THE FINISHING LINE OF BASE CAMP IS IN SIGHT".

It is an astonishing achievement and comes 60 years after Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest for the first time back in May 1953.

Kenton Cool reached the summit of Everest at 2am on Sunday morning with his climbing partner, Sherpa Dorje Gylgen.

We reported on it at the time on PlanetSKI.

"Dorje Gylgen and I took bare essentials and made it to roof of world in total darkness. Disappointment of being early and not seeing sun rise made good with privilege of sitting alone in absolutely silence with my friend, just as I've always thought Hillary and Tenzing did," he said

"Dorje and I laughed at stupidity of our small head-torches beaming into nothing."

The pair summitted the three peaks, Nuptse (7,861m), Everest (8,848m) and Lhotse (8,516m), in three consecutive days and the expedition itself took 10 days.

They have now arrived back in base camp.

"Back down in BC totally shattered like never before after a week in high mountains. Now it's rest," he said.

It is being seen as one of the last significant mountaineering "firsts" in the area.

Before he set off he wrote in his blog: "I'm not even sure if it's possible to climb all three of these monsters in the manner that I hope, but surely that's the best reason of all to try."

We will bring you further news and reaction on the achievement later.

There is a story about the achievement on the British Mountaineering Council web site by Alex Messenger - see here for that story.

Congratulations Kenton.Smile

NEWS UPDATE Wednesday 16.00:

KC UPdate: "I'VE LOOKED AT THOSE THREE MONSTERS FOR TEN YEARS WAITING FOR SOME FOOL TO TRY AND CLIMB THEM. TODAY I KNOW DORJE AND I ARE THOSE FOOLS. NOW STUCK IN BASE CAMP FOR ONE MORE NIGHT DUE TO BAD WEATHER. COMMS DOWN. DO PEOPLE KNOW WE'VE DONE IT?".

NEWS UPDATE Thursday 14.30:
