Biggest Austrian ski area just got bigger
Monday August 18, 2014 - Email this article to a friend

The Ski Welt area includes Soll, Westendorf, Ellmau and Brixen. It now has 280km of slopes with 90 lifts. 85% of the area has snow cannon coverage.

For ski resorts big is beautiful as resorts battle to have the biggest linked areas.

This winter the Ski Welt area has spent €23m on enlarging its terrain and improving facilities.

The area is in the Austrian Tirol and part of it is next to Kitzbuhel.

One of the new jewels in the crown is the new 8-person Aualm chairlift in Scheffau.

The €10m lift has all the mod cons; heated seats, all-weather hoods and self-locking restraining bars.

The old lift was taken down earlier in the summer.

In Brixen there is a new 1.2km red run from Holzalm at 1,440m to Gasthof Nieding  at 1,215m.

It has nudged up the piste miles of the largest linked ski area in Austria.

The area has also bought 4 new piste bashers bringing the total to 64.

The area now has 1,500 snow cannons but of course the temperature needs to be low for them to work and so it does not guarantee snow.

The area is low with the skiing only going up to 1,890km.

Last winter Austria has a poor record for snowfall and had a very mild winter. At times the cannons were simply unable to work.

2013/14  was though an exception to recent trends as Austria has done well for snowfall in the past 5 years or so.

There have also been some improvements to the restaurants in the Ski Welt area.

The Bergkaiser panoramic restaurant now has table service and has seating for 200 people.

While the sun terrace at Berggasthof Brandstadl in Scheffau has also been substantially extended.

Soll is popular with the British, especailly for beginners, mixed ability groups and those that like intermediate crusing.

So, at 280km of slopes how does the Ski Welt compare in size to others?

In Austria Lech has 190km, St Anton 120km, Saalbach-Hinterglemm 200km and Ischgl 238km.

However it is still dwarfed by the mega-resorts of the French Alps.

Les Portes du Soleil boasts 650km, Les Trois Vallees 600km and Paradiski 425km.

Ski Welt is closer in size to Espace Killy at 300km though the terrain is very different.

It will be bigger than Verbier in Switzerland as its 4 Vallees ski area is cut in half after a disagreement about the distribution of lift pass revenue; see here for that PlanetSKI story.
