Family ski company calls for change in law
Wednesday September 17, 2014 - Email this article to a friend

Ski Famille has criticised recent legislation that bans parents taking their children out of school for a ski holiday. It calls for discretion for head teachers and points out the sporting and educational benefits.

The fresh call for an outbreak of common sense was made this week as Ski Famille launched its winter brochure.

The family tour operator says children are allowed time away from school for other sports such as rugby and cricket.

So, why not skiing and snowboarding?

It also argues that exercise and stimulation in a mountain environment are wholly different from a beach holiday.

"Nobody wants to jeopardise their child's education, but some periods away from school, including in our view skiing, can have positive educational benefits," said the managing director of Ski Famille, Chris Thompson.

The company has been offering ski holidays to France for the past 25 years.

The content editor of PlanetSKI, James Cove, took his three children out of school to holiday with Ski Famille to Les Gets back in the late 1990's. The kids were starting out at Primary School.

"It didn't seem to do them any long-term harm, in fact quite the opposite," said James Cove.

See this related PlanetSKI story on James's view on the beneficial effects of skiing on his children. It has received many messages of support and thousands of page views.

"The current approach from central government seems to be at odds with the preferences of many parents and even some head teachers," said Chris Thompson.

"In addition a blanket approach does not take into account the differing situation of children at Infant and Junior Level as opposed to those in Secondary schools," he added.

The company calls for greater staggered school holidays and half-term breaks.

The need to introduce children to snowsports is a topic of hot debate at the moment as we have mentioned in this related PlanetSKI story, Fears for the future.
