$50m to create largest US ski area
Monday December 8, 2014 - Email this article to a friend

Park City and Canyons are joining up and will be the biggest linked ski area in the USA. The two resorts are now owned by Vail Resorts.

The two resorts in Utah are now both owned by Vail Resorts.

There was a bitter and acrimonious battle last summer as Vail Resorts took control of Park City Mountain Resort for $182.5m so it could join it with the Canyons; see here for all the background to the take-over.

Now we know why.

It has hugely ambitious plans for the future.

At the time we described it on PlanetSKI as "a seismic shift in the US ski industry" and it appears it is exactly that.

The resorts will be linked, the facilities will be improved and it is set to become one of the best ski areas in North America.

Once the link lift is in place there will be 7,300 acres of skiable terrain.

It will be an 8-seater gondola from the base of the existing Silverlode Lift at Park City to the Flatiron Lift at Canyons.

The linking of the resorts in Utah, that are all a short distance from each other, has been discussed for years.

We reported on it back in 2012 when we last visited.

The link between Park City and Canyons could be the start of other resorts linking up.

Money is also being spent on other, but less significant, facilities to improve Park City.

- The King Con and Motherlode lifts will be upgraded.

- There will be new restaurants and upgrades to others.

- Snowmaking will be improved.

"This comprehensive capital plan for Park City and Canyons is one of the most ambitious and impactful plans undertaken at any resort in industry history," said the President of the mountain division for Vail Resorts, Blaise Carrig.

It is hoped the developments will be in place for the season of 2015/16 but planning permissions need to be granted.

The two resorts will effectively merge and be branded as one.

The company intends to operate the two resorts as one unified branded experience under the name "Park City Mountain Resort".

The Canyons base area will be renamed "Canyons at Park City".

"The company will continue to maintain the unique history and atmosphere of the two base areas with differentiated marketing for the diverse hotel and hospitality experiences," said a statement from Vail Resorts.
