Vail Resorts buys Perisher
Tuesday March 31, 2015 - Email this article to a friend

The US resorts owner has made its first foreign purchase as it takes over the Australian resort for $136m. It is the largest ski area in Australia and has surprised the industry.

Perisher is in Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales.

It has 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, 47 lifts, seven mountain peaks, five terrain parks, more than 100 groomed trails, night skiing and nearly 70 miles of cross-country skiing trails.

"The acquisition of Perisher creates an incredibly exciting connection between Australian skiers and riders and our mountain resorts in the United States", said Kirsten Lynch, chief marketing officer of Vail Resorts.

"Today is a very exciting day for Perisher guests and employees" said Peter Brulisauer, chief executive officer of Perisher. "Vail Resorts is the preeminent mountain resort company in the world, revered for their world-class mountain resorts, and being a leader in innovation and above all, exceptional guest service," he added.

The two will be joining up their lift passes in a reciprocal agreement that hopes to encourage eack to ski in the others ski areas.

Vail Resorts will be using the acquisition to bring Australians to its resorts in the USA.

Indeed it is one of the major reasons for the purchase.

"Australia is one of the most important international markets for ski resorts across the Northern Hemisphere, generating an estimated 1 million skier visits annually to resorts in North America, Japan and Europe," said the CEO of Vail Resorts, Rob Katz.

"We see this as a ground- breaking acquisition that will dramatically enhance the connection between our company and Australian skiers and riders," he added.

Vail Resorts owns and runs many resorts in the USA including Vail itself plus Breckenridge, Beaver Creek and Keystone in Colorado.

It recently bought Park City Mountain Resort in Utah in an acrimonious legal battle.

It is now building a new lift to link it to Canoyns, that it also runs, to create the largest ski area in the USA; see here for recent PlanetSKI news story on the development.

Further west it has Northstar, Heavenly and Kirkwood around Lake Tahoe.

Already the reciprocal lift passes are being promoted.
