Park City & Canyons merge
Thursday July 30, 2015 - Email this article to a friend

The two ski resorts in Utah are being linked by a connecting lift for next winter and will join up to become one single resort. It will be known as Park City.

The two resorts are both run by Vail Resorts after it managed to secure Park City last Autumn in a bitter legal dispute; see here for the story.

Vail Resorts is spending $50 million on upgrades to the area that include a gondola connecting the resorts, two other new lifts and upgrades to restaurants.

The projects will ready by the 2015-2016 ski season.

Now it has been announced there will be a single name for the ski area. It will be formally known as 'Park City Mountain Resort', but most people will probably just call it 'Park City'.

"When people are out in the world and they talk about where they are going to ski, they say 'I'm going to go ski in Park City,'" said the Park City chief operating officer, Bill Rock, as the new name was announced.

It will become the largest ski area in the USA, with over 7,300 acres of skiable terrain, and second in size to Whistler in the whole of North America.

It certainly makes sense to give the area a single name and to keep it simple.

It will help with marketing the area and the resort can stress that bigger is better.

"We're excited to see the recent developments in Park City, and this simple messaging will make the proposition clearer for international visitors. We fully expect Park City to continue to grow in popularity with British skiers and boarders over the next few years," said the managing director of the UK tour operator, Craig Burton.

The newly named ski area has a new logo too.

And a new tagline: "There is only one. Park City."

The new connecting lift between the two ski areas could become part of a wider project to link more resorts in the area - the so-called One Wasatch Project.

PlanetSKI has reported on the idea in the past and it would see the creation of ski terrain more like one of the large linked ski areas in the Alps.
