Free ski coaching & guiding service
Tuesday September 22, 2015 - Email this article to a friend

Neilson is to offer ski coaching in the same way it offers free watersports tuition in its summer programme. It follows the outlawing of ski hosting by the French courts.

Here at PlanetSKI we think it is an interesting idea and other ski tour operators will be watching closely.

Some already offer short periods of free coaching and guiding but this is on a different level altogether.

It is the first large and inclusive service of its kind to be launched in recent years.

Next winter the company will offer its clients free guiding and tuition across their whole holiday in all of their properties in France, Italy, Austria and Andorra.

It follows a trial scheme in Les2Alpes, France, and El Tartar in Andorra last season.

"We wanted to do it low-key and only told people about the service on the transfer coach. It proved to be hugely popular this past season," said Paul Deadman from Neilson.

"One person who has skied in Les2Alpes many times said he was introduced to new slopes and new experiences," he added.

In part it is due to the French courts banning ski hosting that we have reported about in the past, but it also aims to offer the new service to give added value to clients.

We reported on it in full earlier in the summer when we heard of the idea; see here for our report from the time.

Neilson is adding it to its Mountain Collection programme for the coming winter and it has now been officially unveiled.

The company will use fully-qualified instructors who will offer a combination of leading, guiding, coaching and tuition.

The groups will even get priority in lift queues to get ahead of the pack.

All at no extra cost.

Sessions include Carve it up, Nail those turns, Back to black and Winter legs.

It will offer a full programme in its main resorts and a smaller offerings in the others but guests will be able to take at least two, 2-hour sessions per week.

French companies like UCPA and Club Med have been offering ski and snowboarding tuition as part of the package for many years.

Recently Crystal has gone the other way and dropped its similar service as we reported here and the Ski Club of Great Britain is using qualified instructors to offer a similar service in France.

As well as helping guests improve their technique during coaching sessions, the Neilson Mountain Experts will be giving free guiding around the ski area offering tips on where to find the best snow and the best runs.

They will also explore pistes off the beaten track and pointing out the best places to eat on the mountain.

"Neilson pioneered 'ski leading' back in the 1970s, Neilson is going back to its roots of high value, great service and innovative ideas with the Neilson Mountain Experts providing guests with a free guiding and coaching service each week," said a statement from the company this week.

Neilson is also offering family guiding during UK ski holidays, suitable for ages 12 years and up within the Neilson Mountain Experts programme.

Neilson has 24 properties in its Mountain Collection portfolio - 7  hotels and 17 chalets across Andorra, France, Austria and Italy.

It will be offered in all the Neilson-run chalets and hotels in France (Alpes d'Huez, Les2Alpes, La Plagne, Les Menuires, Montgenevre, Serre Chevalier, Tignes and Val d'Isere) as well as in its properties in Sauze d'Oulx in Italy and El Tartar in Andorra.
