Drone zones

A US company has teamed up with a number of resorts in North America to offer people drone selfie videos. Will we see something similar in Europe?

Many resorts in the USA have a blanket ban on drones until a suitable safety policy can be drawn up.

We have reported about it in this earlier story on PlanetSKI.

The safety of people comes into question if drones were to be flying about all over the place above the ski slopes.

What is not called into question is the great footage they can produce and that people love of seeing pictures and videos of themselves.

Step forward Cape Productions that has teamed up with several resorts in the USA and Canada to offer people professionally shot and edited video in a controlled environment.

They will be filmed in a so-called Drone-Zone with a special run set aside and only one craft flying at a time.

The resorts include Homewood Mountain Resort and Squaw Valley in California, Winter Park in Colorado, Powder Mountain in Utah, Timberline Lodge in Oregon, Mountain Creek in New Jersey and Fernie in British Columbia in Canada.

"Video is almost the new currency. Everyone wants pictures of themselves. We have a lot of creative freedom to get different angles of skiers as they are going down the mountain. The sky is the limit for drones," said the co-founder of Cape Productions, Louis Gresham, to US media.

The company charges $100 - $200 for a 2-minute video.

So, will we be seeing similar services offered in the Alps?
