Thursday December 17, 2015 - Email this article to a friend

Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Salzburgerland is being linked to Fieberbrunn in the Tirol. The official opening took place on Saturday and here we look at other new initiatives in the area.

It is perhaps the most significant ski resort development taking place in Austria this winter.

On Saturday 19th December, the official opening ceremony of the Tirol-S gondola took place.

There was a high altitude "pillow fight" on the Reiterkogel, followed by music from both the provinces of Tirol and Salzburgerland.

Here at PlanetSKI we visited last winter to ski the area and in January 2016 we will be back to see and to ski the new area.

See here for a PlanetsKI news story on the new area and plans to link it with Zell am See too.

"For decades there has been talk of linking Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang in SalzburgerLand with Fieberbrunn in Tirol. This has transformed into reality and the two provinces have been joined together by the high-speed Tirol-S Gondola," said a statement from the Austria National Tourist Office.

The linking lift is a Doppelmayr 10-seater single cable gondola lift.

It can take 2,600 people per hour.

A new piste of 3.5km with a vertical of 780m has been created.

It has snowmaking from top to bottom and create an area with 240kms of pistes and 68 lifts.

We look forward to reporting back on the new area next January and will bring you further details of the opening ceremonies later this weekend.

This winter in Salzburgerland also sees the 50th anniversary of skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun.

The first guests were taken up on 12th December 1965.

The area will have a series of celebrations and exhibitions to mark the occasion.

"The Kitzsteinhorn Glacier offers better than ever skiing, snowparks, freeriding terrain and ski touring routes with a snow guarantee from October until June," said a statement from the area.
