On Sunday morning though, and suffering a hairline fracture, Vonn was back up the mountain.

Wearing double knee braces she won the first run in the Alpine Combined in the Grand Valira World Cup.

Kasja Kling was second and Laurenne Ross third.

She came well down the field in the second run and finished 13th overall, but her victory in the first one shows her determination and dedication.

Saturday's  incident has been reported on social media.

Saturday's  race was interrupted for around 10 minutes.

"Got caught in the soft snow today and crashed pretty hard. X-rays showed I have a hairline fracture in my left knee and will get an MRI on Monday," Vonn posted on her facebook post.

But despite the injury, she did not rule out competing in Sunday's super combined race at the same venue in Andorra.

"I will wait and see how I feel tomorrow to decide if I can race. Will keep you updated," she said on Saturday.

And compete she did.

"Thx for all of the support and well wishes. Means a lot. Also congrats to my teammate @lalalaurenne on 2nd place today!"

The start of Saturday's super G event in Andorra was delayed several hours due to strong winds and snowfall.

The race was delayed by 3 hours allowing the course workers to clear the fresh snow.

The organisers had to lower the start of the race.

The race was eventually won by Federica Brignone of Italy, and Vonn's teammate Laurenne Ross was second.

NEWS UPDATE, Sunday 28th 20:50

Lindsey Vonn has had an MRI scan on her injured knee.

"So the MRI shows a pretty substantial fracture in my tibial plateau. MCL looks decent as well as the rest of my knee. Now I will talk to my trainers and make a plan. I'll keep you guys updated. Big thanks to everyone who helped me get through today and to the fans that always supported me!" she said on her Facebook page.
