3rd FASTEST BRITON IS BOBSLEDDER
Sunday July 31, 2016 - Email this article to a friend

Joel Fearon ran the 3rd fastest 100m at the English Athletics Championships this summer. It bodes well for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The 27-year old has his sights set on the podium in the 4-man bob at Pyeonchang.  He was part of the team at Sochi.

The bobsleigh needs an explosive start and it seems Joel will be able to provide it in 2018 following his run at the weekend.

His time of 9.96 seconds is the quickest by a Briton this year and for GB only Linford Christie and James Dasaolu have run the 100m faster.

He is only the seventh British sprinter to post an official sub-10-second time over 100m.

He may compete in athletics ahead of 2018 but says his focus is the Winter Olympics.

"My focus is really on the bobsleigh at the Winter Olympics. We missed out on a medal in Sochi so I'm very focused on going and redeeming that and hopefully getting that medal that we should have got," he said in an interview with Athletics Weekly.

The GB Team came 5th but was beaten by the Russia 'A' Team and 'B' Team at Sochi.

Following the results of further drug testing after the recent doping scandal there is a chance GB may be elevated to Bronze position if the Russian are subsequently disqualified; see our earlier PlanetSKI story on the possible medal.

The path from athletics to bobsleigh is a well-trodden path.

The sprinter, Mark Lewis-Francis, who won Olympic gold in the 4x100m relay team at the 2004 Athens Games, joined the GB Bobsleigh set-up last year in a bid to reach the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

His fellow 2004 Olympic gold medallist, Jason Gardener, also competed in the 2008 GB Bobsleigh championships.

Other sprinters who have made the switch include Simeon Williamson, Marcus Adam, Allyn Condon and Beijing Olympian Craig Pickering.
