There are a host of new activities on the piste and off in Val Thorens for 2016/17. See here for all that is new. NEW

Val Thorens is always a good option for winter holidays, especially if you like them action packed.

The resort in Les3Vallées in France has endless activities on offer, both on skis and off, on the snow and even in the air.

A quick glance at what Val Thorens had in store last season:

And this winter it's bringing monoskiing back...

Cool in the 1980s, monoskiing was the hot new snowsport before being overtaken by snowboarding.

It is easy to learn and, if you like speed, then it might be just your bag.

With local École Ski Cool, prices start at €49 per hour for two people and €59 per hour for three to five people.

Freestyle for all

The resort continues to add variety to its fun zones, investing €200,000 recently in a makeover of the Snowpark.

The Easypark has a new name - the Familypark, with easy, creative and fun jumps so beginners can have a go at their own pace and in complete safety.

The medium zone of the Snowpark for more experienced riders has also been extended and improved.

New obstacles have been added with over 20 new modules (rails, boxes and jibs) for all levels.

There is also a large zone that can be converted to XL for special occasions (events and competitions).

For the more die hard freestylers (and those with a little French)...

A new ski touring circuit

No need to get up at the crack of dawn for your ski fitness routine - a separate marked circuit has been created for skiers so they can head out with climbing skins on for a 1.5km session right from the resort.

Allow an hour tops to do the 280 metre sunrise climb, before coming back down via the Plein Sud blue run.

The circuit is ideal for beginners to practise ski touring alone, or for anyone wanting to change the pace in a week of full-on snowsports.

The more energetic can do a series of ascents, one after the other, or head out for an off-piste adventure with an instructor in the Vallon du Borgne.

The route is free and open during the hours of the ski area.

Ice climbing

With expert coaching from mountain guides, a ice climbing taster session gives a different kind of climbing experience as well as an injection of adrenalin.

The basic techniques introduce you to the amazing world of the mountains' climbing sport.

Price:  €120 2-hour afternoon activity with Evolution2.

Play in the air

Fly a Gyrocopter over Val Thorens, taking off from the brand new heli-station.

The autogyro (gyrocopter) looks like a tiny helicopter, but it's lighter, with much freer movement in the air.

Alone with the pilot, this is an intimate flying experience, where you explore the amazing landscapes of  Les3Vallées.

Prices around €100 for a flight of 15-20 minutes.

On top of these activities new to the resort in Les3Vallées, holidaymakers can also try this winter mountain biking on snow, ice-driving, Europe's highest zip wire, ice-diving, ski cross and tobogganing.
