NEW FARE-CHECKER FOR ALPS TRAINS
Tuesday October 11, 2016 - Email this article to a friend

Want to go skiing by train but can't bear the complicated process of finding out what tickets are available and how much they'll cost? Help is at hand.

From Thursday 13th October, a new price-checking resource is available to coincide with the opening of winter rail bookings on the same date.

This is when many of the season's indirect rail journeys to the Alps go on sale.

"Live Train Prices" has been set up by the independent rail-ski website, Snowcarbon, which encourages skiers to take the train to the mountains as a comfortable, relaxing and eco-friendly alternative to flying.

Daniel Elkan, founder of Snowcarbon, says finding out how much journeys cost has never been as easy as it should be because there's been nowhere for skiers to check trips for popular dates of the season and see, at a glance, which ones are on sale and at what price.

From Thursday, travellers will be able to view live rail prices for journeys from London to 14 train stations in the Alps, serving more than 50 ski resorts (listed below), in France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy using the following types of journeys:

  • Eurostar Ski Train - daytime to the Tarentaise region of France
  • Eurostar Ski Train - overnight to the Tarentaise region of France
  • Eurostar + TGV - to resorts in France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy
  • Eurostar via Lyon - to resorts in France
  • Eurostar + sleeper train from Paris - to several resorts in France and Italy

Prices for each journey are displayed in tables with associated graphics to show departure and arrival times at each train station on that route.

"Giving skiers a clear picture of their journey options is a vital part of helping them out of planes and cars and onto trains," says Daniel.

"There are many indirect journeys that skiers aren't even aware of, to resorts that they didn't realise they can reach so easily by train."

To obtain prices, Snowcarbon's Live Train Prices section accesses fares from rail-booking website Loco2.com which is a partner of train operators such as Eurostar and SNCF.

Fares shown are exactly the same as if going directly to Eurostar or SNCF's websites.

The ski resorts that can be reached with these journeys include:

France:  Alpe d'Huez, Avoriaz, Brides les Bains, Courchevel, Flaine, La Clusaz, La Plagne, La Rosiere, La Tania, Le Grand Bornand, Les Arcs, Les Carroz, Les Contamines, Les Deux Alpes, Les Gets, Les Menuires, Megeve, Meribel, Montgenevre, Morillon, Morzine, Peisey-Vallandry, Sainte Foy, Samoens, Saint Gervais, St Martin de Belleville, Serre Chevalier, Tignes, Val Cenis, Val d'Isere, Val Thorens, Valmorel.

Switzerland:   Crans-Montana, Davos, Diablarets, Grindelwald, Leysin, Murren, Saas-Fee, Wengen, Verbier, Villars, Zermatt.

Sales opened on Thursday 13th October 2016 at 5am for travel from 11th December 2016 - 2nd February 2017.

The second booking window opens on Friday 4th November for travel from 3rd February - 5th March 2017.

There are 2 further ticket sales windows for later bookings.

Tickets for the direct Eurostar Ski Train have been available since July, and additional February half-term trains have been added, as we reported in September.

See below for a video of what the rail jouney to the Alps is like as the PlanetSKI content editor, James Cove, took the train to the Swiss Alps back in 2013.

If you're thinking of booking an indirect train via Eurostar to Paris and then TGV to the Alps, this fun short film by Snowcarbon tells you the best way to do it.
