VERBIER - PURE ENERGY. DAY 3 - James Cove, Verbier
Wednesday July 19, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

Our editor continues his mission to see if the resort's marketing slogan is true. Today it's a high altitude hike. And we mean high!

DAY THREE

The walk is to the Corbassiere glacier across the valley from Verbier and underneath the Grand Combin mountain.

The hike starts at 2,100m, climbs to 2,600m and finishes on the valley floor at Fionnay at 1,490m.

Total ascent/decent is 1,600m over almost 15km of steep terrain and it should take around 6 hours.

Oh, and we're crossing this structure, but more of that later.

My guide for the day was Marie-Anne Berazategui.

Verbier, SwitzerlandVerbier, Switzerland

She is a hiking guide and what she doesn't know about the flora and fauna in this part of the Alps isn't worth knowing.

Her knowledge was encyclopedic.

And she had some advice.

"I have three pieces of advice for you. May I suggest you turn your phone off, open your eyes and all your other senses, but above all behave like a kid again and be excited by your natural environment and notice what is going on around you," she said.

And with that we were off.

We strolled through some gentle alpine meadows to begin with.

The flowers we saw en route were beautiful and there are many more photos of them at the end of this article.

I knew the hike would get much tougher later so I just admired the views and let my thoughts wander as one foot planted itself in front of the other.

I thought back to the two fantastic days I had enjoyed so far playing on zip wires and climbing Mont Fort:
As I turned a corner I came across this beast.

And thought it best to leave the path and let the family and friends through.

It is their home after all, not mine.

Slowly but surely the terrain changed and soon enough the flowers were growing out of rocks rather than lush alpine meadows.

We were now on an area where centuries ago the glaciers has been:

And then we marched on and when I turned another corner the Grand Combin came into view.

It soon filled my vision.

And 3 and a half hours later we had made it to the top: The Panossiere hut at 2,641m.

We took a different route down passing through some stunning landscapes.

And more than two hours later we ended our hike at Fionnay at 1,490m.

There are more that 500kms of marked walking trails in the area from the difficult down to easy.

6 TOP WALKING TIPS

  • Have a good pair of walking boots with full ankle support.
  • Check the local weather forecast.
  • Take the correct clothing - rain comes in quickly and the temperature can vary enormously in a single day.
  • Take plenty of water and energy snacks.
  • Don't forget a hat and suncream.
  • A small guidebook with information about the area and its wildlife will enhance your day.

It had been a long and hot 6 hours of hiking - mountain water never tasted so good.

So, has the resort's marketing slogan Verbier Pure Energy, lived up to its reputation?

Put it this way I let these two fellas soak in the bath for 30 minutes when I returned to my hotel after the hike.

They'd had a tough day.

A very tough day.

They deserved the soak.

Verbier is billing itself as a resort for thrill and chills as we reported earlier on PlanetSKI:

And much can be accessed by its new VIP pass, Verbier Infinite Playground:

And tomorrow the legs will be taking me Downhill mountain biking on a course reckoned to be one of the toughest in this part of the Alps.

And as promised earlier, here are a few more pictures of the wonderful mountain flowers I had seen on the hike.

Not exactly 'Pure Energy' but sometimes chilling is just as good as thrilling:
