VERBIER - PURE ENERGY. DAY 4 - James Cove, Verbier
Friday July 21, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

The final day has dawned on our PlanetSKI test of whether Verbier's marketing slogan lives up to its claim. So has it? NEW

DAY FOUR

Even if the day turns out to be a gentle affair it doesn't really matter.

With mountain biking you certainly look the part - whatever your standard.

Our guide for the session in the Verbier Bike Park, Brice Cantenot, gave us a few tips.

And then we were off.

And this is how he does it.

The first route we took was a blue one and it was certainly one of the hardest blues I have ridden.

Next it was a red route through the trees.

Biking is becoming increasingly popular in Verbier and in the past few years numbers have gone up 150% each year.

The Verbier Bike Park

  • 7 trails (2 Blues, 4 Reds, 1 Yellow)
  • 12kms of track

If a bike park isn't quite your cup of tea then there are 833kms of other trails in the area around Verbier.

75% are aimed at advanced riders but there are plenty of easy ones and if you want a little extra help then there are e-bikes for hire.

See here for an earlier PlanetSKI story on the growth of E-Bikes.

After half an hour the riding on my final day wasn't over, but my test of Verbier's marketing slogan was.

See here for the first three days as I took to zip wires, climbed Mont Fort and hiked a high-alpine glacier route.

In fact it wouldn't have mattered if we'd gone round and round in circles for hours on end on a flat alpine meadow.

I had made my mind up on the excitement offered by Verbier in the summer.

Verbier had delivered it's promise - Pure Energy.

Verbier is billing itself as a resort for thrill and chills as we reported earlier on PlanetSKI:

And much can be accessed by its new VIP pass, Verbier Infinite Playground:

The mountain biking was off the scale.

I should have known as we reported on it a few years ago on PlanetSKI.

But if anything the biking here is too extreme according to Brice.

"At the moment we do not have any easier green trails and many people comment on this. However it is difficult getting all the necessary permissions but I am glad to say we will have a green route next summer and this will allow people new to mountain biking to have some terrain," he said to me.

TEN TOP TIPS FOR MOUNTAIN BIKING:
  • Wear a helmet and adequate protective clothing including sunglasses + gloves
  • Check your equipment is in good repair and take a repair kit.
  • Use equipment that is suitable for the route and the sport.
  • Stay on signposted trails.
  • Keep in control of your speed.
  • Watch out for hikers and walkers - pedestrians have priority.
  • Respect the fauna and flora.
  • Close gates and fences behind you to protect livestock.
  • Pick up all your waste
  • Don't forget to pack a drink, an energy snack, money and spare clothes.

RULES OF THE BIKE PARK:

  • Leave nothing but your tracks - Be respectful of the environment in which you ride. Stay on the MTB tracks and do not create new ones. Do not take short cuts betweenbends or leave litter on or beside the trails.
  • Be Properly equipped - Always wear a helmet, back and knee protection and all safety equipment that may be required or recommended depending on the tracks and the conditions.
  • Use the correct equipment for your trail - Some bikes are made for specific situations. Don't use a cross-country bike on an advanced or expert level downhill track for example.
  • Check your speed - Ensure that you are in control of your speed at all times in order to be able to slow down or stop in the event of an unexpected obstruction.
  • Get acquainted with the trails - Do not exceed you linitis on a trail you are using for the first time. Familiarise yourself with any difficulties you may encounter by maintaining a reasonable speed initially. Do not hesitate to stop and take a look at the more technical sections of the trail.
  • Stop when and where necessary - You may need to stop during your descent for a variety of reasons. If so stop in a suitable palce and never in the middle of the trail  in order to leave space for others.
  • Other riders - Be careful of the other riders. If they are ahead of you and riding more slowly, ask them politely to move aside. And vice versa, if somebody catches up with you  then allow them to overtake as soon as possible.
So after 4-days putting the market slogan, Verbier - Pure Energy, to the test I can report that it is 100% true.

And I didn't have time to go paraponting, via ferrata or any other adrenalin activities.

Next summer I hope to be back and I thoroughly encourage you to visit if any of my activities and adventures here in the past four days have aroused your interest.

I'll be back for some more Pure Energy in Verbier.

Will you?
