As another UK ski operator is set to offer summer cycling we look at its growth. And its potential role as boost for mountain tourism.

The latest ski operator to offer summer cycling holidays in the specialist ski operator, Powder N Shine.

The company has a handful of chalets in Reberty above Les Menuires in Les3Vallees in France.

Now it is set to offer cycling holidays next year and plans are at an advanced stage.

From next summer in July and August, it will offer week-long road biking excursions in the French Alps.

Guided routes climbing the most famous local climbs are on the books:
  • Col de la Madeleine.
  • Petit St Bernard.
  • Semnoz.
  • Annecy lake and more.

Some resorts such as Les Gets/ Morzine and Les2Alpes have been offering it for years with huge networks of trails and parks plus big international events.

Others are jumping on the bandwagon.

Earlier this summer our editor, James Cove, was in Les2Alpes for downhill mountain biking as the glacier opened for summer skiing and snowboarding.
And last week he was in Verbier in Switzerland where they have a Bike Park with 7 specialist downhill runs and 833kms of marked trails around the mountains:
'We have seen the number of people mountain biking in Verbier rise by 150% each year and it is bringing in much needed summer business to the resort," said Brice Cantenot, who designed the Verbier Bike Park.

A couple of years ago PlanetSKI visited Verbier and our reporter, the mountain biker Chris Moran, looked at the growing importance of mountain biking for summer tourism.
It has only grown and become important since we posted his article.

Verbier has stopped exhibiting at the London Ski & Snowboard Show but does take a stand at the London Bike Show.

With the number of skiers and snowboarders in general decline across the winter months cycling is seen by some as a saviour.

Whether it be road cycling, e-biking, cross-country cycling or mountain biking in its various forms.

One of our reporter, Aislin Bamber, took to an e-bike for the first time last month in Val Gardena, Italy.
Ski rental shops have become bike rental shops in the summer months.

Summer businessSummer business

One UK company, Ski Solutions, has bought two cycling holiday companies, Cycling for Softies and Bents, in the last two years.

It has re-branded as BSpoke Tours.

Miles Porter, the Head of Activities for the cycling brands, says they've started updating their programme and are now marketing not only to their existing cycling customers but those who book ski holidays through Ski Solutions.

He told PlanetSKI that the company had been keen to branch out "essentially to diversify and have a summer product".

"We have been very successful selling ski holidays and we think there is a crossover between people who like to go skiing and those who want more than a fly-and-flop summer holiday."
PlanetSKI's cheif reporter, Jane Peel, earlier posted an article on how ski resorts are now focusing on summer with cycling leading the way.
And it is not just small UK tour operators that are expanding into cycling.

The big boys are doing so too and e-biking seems to be the main focus.

We have been visiting Lake Garda in Italy with Crystal Ski and Gstaad with Switzerland Tourism this summer - cycling was a highlight.
Inghams too is stressing its cycling credentials.
For us at PlanetSKI cycling will not be replacing skiing and snowboarding anytime soon but we have rather enjoyed swapping two planks for two pedals this summer.
