In a delayed decision the Federal Council has backed the 2026 bid but it will need public support and that is far from certain.NEW & UPDATED

The decision on whether to support the bid was due to come last week but officials said they needed more time to decide whether to back the £775m bid from the city in the Valais canton.

The support gives the bid a significant boost and it now has to go through parliament for final approvement.

"The Council of State of Valais welcomes the Federal Council's support for the Olympic and Paralympic bid for Sion 2026. A further step is taken towards the achievement of the Olympic Games," said the Valais in a statement.

"The canton of Valais will now take the necessary measures to guarantee the financing of the investments planned in Valais for sports and non-sports facilities," it added.

60m CHF (£47m) will be invested in the restoration of existing infrastructures and the construction of permanent infrastructures.

Any bid will have to go to a public referendum and a date has been set for June 10th 2018.

Last weekend the people of the Tirol in Austria rejected a proposal that Innsbruck should bid for the 2026 Games.

The city had been seen as a strong candidate.

People in the Swiss canton of Graubünden voted decisively against Davos and St Moritz bidding for the 2026 Games in a referendum in February.

We reported on the rejection on 13th February in PlanetSKI's News in Brief.

Many European cities pulled out of bidding for the 2022 Games that eventually went to Beijing due to a lack of public support.

These included Oslo, Stockholm and Krakow.

The Sion bid uses much existing infrastructure.

Events will take place across 5 cantons.

"Swiss Olympic welcomes this strong signal from the Federal Council. From the beginning of the process, we have been convinced of the seriousness and the strength of the Sion 2026 dossier," said the President of Swiss Olympic and vice-chairman of the bid, Jürg Stahl.

"This decision enables us to continue our work to make this candidature even stronger and to convince the population.

"Our main focuses are henceforth the population of our country and the athletes from Switzerland and the rest of the world, who will all be central to this project.

"In this way, we will continue our efforts with a high level of motivation and great commitment, certain of what course to map out."

Calgary in Canada is among the other 2026 contenders and the USA is considerign a bid for either 2026 or 2030.

Almaty in Kazakhstan, Sapporo in Japan and Erzurum in Turkey are also looking at whether to throw their hats in the ring.
