COUNTDOWN TO PYEONGCHANG - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Tuesday October 31, 2017 - Email this article to a friend

PlanetSKI casts its spotlight on GB's elite snowsport athletes as they prepare for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

November 1st was moment the official countdown began, with 100 days to the Games.

Here at PlanetSKI we're marking it by launching a series of video interviews with our top skiers and snowboarders.

We start with aerials skier Lloyd Wallace who's back on track just over two months after a serious training crash put him in a coma.

If all goes to plan PyeongChang 2018 could be the best ever Winter Olympics for Team GB.

There are genuine medal contenders and we'll be speaking to some of them in the weeks ahead.

They include 20-year-old snowboarder Katie Ormerod - arguably the best prospect for a place on the podium.

Then there's Ormerod's teammate in the GB Park & Pipe snowboard squad, Billy Morgan.

But first up is Britain's top aerials skier, Lloyd Wallace, a young man whose Olympic dream very nearly ended in disaster with a horrific training crash in the summer.

FOCUS ON LLOYD WALLACE

In August 22-year-old Wallace was training on a water jump in Switzerland with the Swiss team.

He crashed and landed on the ramp on his head, suffering what was described at the time as a severe head injury.

He was placed in an induced coma but, remarkably, was out of hospital within a week.

He's recently got back on snow for the first time since his accident and is beginning the work to qualify for his first Olympics in this high risk sport.

The aerials event involves skiers propelling themselves up to six metres in the air off two-four metre high jumps and then performing multiple flips and twists to impress the judges before then attempting to safely land again.
