Known as Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau, the Austrian ski resort names its top 5 things to do, other than the obvious #1 - skiing. NEW

Let's just call it Ski Juwel for short.

The resort in the Tirol has 109km of pistes, 25 mountain huts & restaurants and is made up of the areas of Alpbach, Inneralpbach, Reith im Alpbachtal, Auffach, Oberau and Niederau.

The Schönangeralm

The Schönanger-Kundlalm is a 2.2km walk through breathtaking snowy scenery.

At 1,290 metres above sea level the views are tip top, and takes you out into the silence and peace of the mountains from the bustle of the ski resort life.

Put on some snow shoes and soak it up!

It's the other way to experience the mountains that we usually race by on skis.

En route you'll see a fairytale chapel and rustic wooden mountain huts, so bring your camera.

Indulge in delicious local specialties

It's a foodies haven.

Tirolean dishes and Austrian tipples in the gorgeous mountain setting.

Try an Alpbacher Bier as your wind-down drink at the end of an intense day's skiing.

Wildschönauer Krautinger Schnapps is a must-try, too.

The white beet is a traditional staple of the region and the special ingredient in the local schnapps.

It's said to cure all...

And if you're going to do it properly, pair the schnapps with the regional Alpbachtaler Heumilchkäse - a hay-fed, raw milk cheese.

Family fun and adrenalin-pumping...

You can choose from two routes on the Schatzberg toboggan run in Auffach.

The daunting-named "Wood Chopper" route leads down through the forest to the village below, if thrills is your aim.

Then there's tobogganing by night in Wildschönau.

They're not stingy either:

The Lanerköpfl toboggan run in Niederau winds over 6km, giving you plenty of choice if it's a family favourite.

Winter Hiking

It' big.

Explore the mountains on the winter hiking paths and have time to take in the views that when skiing we sometimes whizz by.

The Panoramawanderweg Reither kogel is an easy 6.7km route that takes approx. three hours.

Other local favorites include the hike from Mittlerer Höhenweg Alpbach to Inneralpbach that takes in snowy, hidden chapels and chocolate-box villages.

The 10.5km circular route passes through Neader and finishes in Alpbach.

Night Skiing

Want to get in as much skiing as possible?

Ski Juwel is just as beautiful by night under the moon (and floodlights...)

New in Ski Juwel

...Is the Alpbachtaler Lauser-Sauser" Alpine coaster.

It's situated next to the Wiedersbergerhornbahn top station and is a 1km undulating track for those looking for even more kicks, if the tobogganing and skiing hasn't quite done it for you yet.

Also new is the Schatzberg gondola.

'Long queues are a thing of the past' with the Schatzbergbahn, so efficient is it.

The renovation of the three lift stations cost approximately €18 million.

Take it from a birds eye view

That's paragliding and hand-gliding.

We'll leave you to experience this...

The Alpbachtal Seenland Card and the Wildschönau Card guest cards offer extra services.

You can take ski buses and guided snow-shoe walks, use the cross-country trails and more things besides...

Check it all out here on the Ski Juwel website.
