MY SUMMER SKI CAMP: PART THREE
20th July 2018 | Kirsty Muir, Whistler, BC

British freestyle skier Kirsty Muir has spent a week at a training camp in Whistler. Here’s her final blog for PlanetSKI.
The 14-year-old from Aberdeen won the Spirit of Sarah Scholarship in memory of the Canadian freestyle skier, Sarah Burke, who died after a crash in training in 2012.
Kirsty has been keeping a diary of her trip for PlanetSKI:
By the 4th day we were more than half way through the week.
The Olympic halfpipe champion Cassie Sharpe was my coach again.
We had another jump session and tried to work hard on some rails too.
I chose to paddleboard after skiing, fantastic on such a hot day.
Day 5 was Hawaiian day so we could dress up if we wanted!
My coach was again Dania Assaly who had last coached our group on Day 2.
We went to the airbag and I worked on tricks for the whole morning.
All the boys headed down the mountain and, because it was officially Girls’ Week at the camp, we had an amazing girls’ shred and photo shoot.
I came up with the idea of doing a backflip in a tube.
I gave it a go…
Our last day up the hill, Day 6, was just as brilliant as all the rest.
After our daily stretch and warm up, if we wanted to, we could do two extra fun activities before skiing: a dance off and running backwards up a hill.
Running up the hill backwards in ski boots was quite difficult but very fun.
My coach was Taylor Lundquist who I’d been with on Day 3.
There was a rail jam because it was the last day.
Us girls did it on a long box that had a drop off the end.
It was a great way to practise tricks and end the camp.
The training all week had been amazing and the views were spectacular.
After the final day up the hill it was time for a pizza party and activities to end off the week.
We played dodgeball, athletes versus coaches!
On Tuesday morning, after saying our goodbyes, I had time for a bit of sightseeing around Whistler.
As we headed to the airport, the views were amazing.
Arriving at the airport was very sad as I finally realised that the week was over.
There were some more goodbyes.
I really enjoyed my summer ski camp.
It was so much fun.
Thank you to Momentum Ski Camps, Sarah Burke Foundation, John and Julia Smart, the coaches and everyone who made the week possible in Canada.
Kirsty has a busy school summer holiday schedule. She’s off to New Zealand later this summer.
Thanks, Kirsty, for taking the time to write for PlanetSKI.
