The outdoor retailer, Decathlon, has listed the favourite countries to ski away from the Alps. Any guesses which they are?
Scotland comes out on top followed by Canada and then the USA.
In fourth spot is Turkey with Bulgaria in fifth place.
“While timeless resorts in France, Italy and Austria will always remain popular with holiday goers, it’s encouraging to see other destinations being considered and on the radar with ski enthusiasts,” said Tea Djusmic, ski and snowboard sports manager at Decathlon.
“This isn’t surprising given the benefits of participating in snow sports in lesser known destinations – it is often cheaper and quieter, making them more accessible and the ideal choice for all ability levels. Clearly, these alternative resorts are now competing with their swanky counterparts located in the Alps.”
The Decathlon Activity Index tracks rates of participation in sport and other physical activities across the year through a monthly, national survey.
More than 7,600 ski-going adults were surveyed by Decathlon.
Scotland has had a very poor winter for snow this season but things have picked up recently.
Out Scotland reporter, Rod Frazer, has been on a ski safari in the Highland – three resorts in three days.
Canada and the USA in particular have had an excellent winter, with resorts in the USA extending their season.
Some even into July.
If you are unfamiliar with Turkey then its main resorts are Ericyes, Uludag and Palandoken.
Bulgaria has the resorts of Bankso, Borovets and Pamporovo.
Here at PlanetSKI we are huge fans of skiing somewhere different and avoiding the busy, expensive and over-crowded resorts.
It is simple to do, even in the Alps.
During the busiest week of the season over the February half-term we skied a number of little-known resorts around Innsbruck.
And our favourite little-known resort in the Tirol?
