SKI RENTAL MARKET CONTINUES TO GROW

More and more of us are renting skis rather than buying them. There has been a sharp growth in the rental sector. Why?
In the 2018/19 season 16.9% more pairs of skis were sold to sports retailers worldwide than in the previous year.
The ski manufacturers sold about 3.7 million pairs to retailers.
60% of the skis sold were used for rental.
More and more people rent skis or even sets including ski boots for the whole season.
“Customers are becoming more demanding and are paying more attention to high-quality and therefore more expensive material,” said a statement from the Austrian Association of Sporting Goods Manufacturers and Suppliers.
Austria is the second largest sales market worldwide after the USA with 432,656 alpine ski pairs sold last season.
Here at PlanetSKI we have our own skis but are increasingly using rental ones as there are no transportation costs and you can change skis according to the snow conditions.
Generally the level of equipment on offer from rental shops and the quality of service are excellent.
Gone are the days of poor quality rental skis.
The vast majority are the latest in the range and have been correctly serviced.
We tend to use Intersport:
Not least because you can do you own ski testing:

PlanetSKI uses IntersportAnother trend is the demand for touring skis and equipment.
Sales of touring ski boots have more than doubled within two years.
Many people want to give touring a go and so the hire shop is the place to head to.
Last season we looked at its growth in Chamonix:
Check out the video below as PlanetSKI editor, James Cove, speaks to Thierry Durand from the Intersport shop in Argentiere about the growth in ski touring.
