Cairngorm to Close Due to Covid-19

The Scottish resort shuts at the close of play on Xmas Eve following new rules announced by the First Minister. Glencoe & the Lecht say they will remain open as Scotland goes into Level 4 restrictions from Boxing Day.
“We are very disappointed to be in this position, but firmly believe it is the right course of action in light of the First Minister’s statement and for the safety of our colleagues, visitors and the local community,” said the Interim Chief Executive of Cairngorm Mountain, Susan Smith.
The resort will retain a small team on site for maintenance.
“In the meantime, we would like to thank our customers and stakeholders for their understanding, wish them all a very happy Christmas and look forward to welcoming them back to Cairngorm,” she added.
The resort opened a small fun park/beginner area last weekend as we reported at the time.
Race training was able to take place.
The whole of mainland Scotland is to be put into Level 4 protection against Covid-19 from Boxing Day for three weeks.
The situation will then be reviewed by the Scottish Government.
The Nevis Range announced in the first half of November it would not be opening, Scottish Ski Resort Suspends its Upcoming Season.
Glencoe is to remain open at this stage but only locals will be allowed.
It comes as snow is on its way.
“It looks like the big storm we need to get the season kicked of could be on it’s way,” said Glencoe.
“Unfortunately as we suspected a few months back, it’s only going to be a few local people who will be able to enjoy the snow initially.
“From the 26th of Dec for 3 weeks we will only be able to accept visitors from the Highlands.”
No refunds will be given to people trying to book from restricted areas.
- Ski hire will be open but only as a click and collect service.
- Plateau cafe will be take away only.
- Ski school to be advised.
“We appreciate how frustrating it is if you don’t live in the Highlands but please respect the Gov guidance so that at least some local people can get out and enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of getting out in the mountains and we can also hopefully earn enough money to keep the wolf from the door,” added the resort.
Glenshee and the Lecht had planned to open last weekend, but were unable to do so due to poor weather.
The Lecht has been making snow in anticipation of opening.
It says it will be opening.
“The Lecht will be open for snow sports starting on the 26th December 2020,” said a statement from the ski area.
“This will be in full compliance with the current Covid restrictions as updated by Sports Scotland, which state that outdoor non -contact sports, which includes snow sports, are possible for all ages in Level 4.
“Current travel restrictions in Level 4 allow only customers from Moray and Aberdeenshire to travel to the Lecht.
“Ski Hire will need to be pre-booked on line and the Café will be on a take-away basis only.”
