The UK’s biggest ski tour operator has come up with its top 5 picks for March and April skiing and snowboarding. Ready for one more trip to the slopes?
Crystal Ski has compiled what it says is a list of the ultimate spots perfect for trips between mid-March and mid-April.
“Spring skiers can expect bluebird skies, lifts staying open later, warmer temperatures and softer snow – what’s not to love?” Crystal says.
So, where’s best to go?
CERVINIA, ITALY
Cervinia’s lifts top out at 3,883m and the resort has heaps of high-altitude slopes.
Beginners have the mountain-top nursery area and nearby blue runs.
The rest of the 150km ski area is tailor-made for intermediates, with long runs like the 11km Ventina red from the Plateau Rosa back down to the village.
The area lift pass covers neighbouring Zermatt, so skiers and snowboarders can explore the snowsure slopes above one of Switzerland’s top resorts as well.
Cervinia itself is in a south-facing valley, which means it gets lots of evening sunshine.
The atmosphere is laid-back, with small hotel bars with sun terraces where you can sample the ‘bombardino’, Italy’s mountain drink.
Crystal Ski Holidays (020 8610 3123) offers a week’s bed and breakfast holiday at the three-star Hotel Furggen from £621 per person when booked online (based on two sharing), flights from Manchester to Turin and transfers (price given is for departure on 27th March 2022). Direct flights available from all major UK airports.
ISCHGL, AUSTRIA
Thanks to its snowsure slopes, Ischgl is one of the most popular Austrian ski resorts. Most of the terrain is above 2,000m, so conditions are good well into spring.
It’s a good bet for intermediates, with 238km of long, wide-open runs to explore.
One of the favourites is the Duty Free Run, a 12km blast on linked reds from the Palinkopf peak down to Samnaun in Switzerland.
For advanced skiers, there are tricky blacks and plenty of off-piste.
Ischgl is famous for its buzzing atmosphere, with plenty of slopeside bars like the Paznauner Taja, where apres-ski can be enjoyed on the huge outdoor terrace.
For evening fun the square by the Silvrettabahn gondola is lined with nightclubs that stay lively till late.
Crystal Ski Holidays (020 8610 3123) offers a week’s half-board holiday at the four-star Hotel Seiblishof from £1,126 per person when booked online (based on two sharing), flights from Birmingham to Innsbruck and transfers (price given is for departure on 2nd April 2022). Direct flights available from all major UK airports.
TIGNES, FRANCE
The high altitude resort has a reputation for spring snowfall and links to not one but two glaciers – its own Grande Motte and the Pisaillas glacier above neighbouring Val d’Isère.
The 300km ski area is shared with Val d’Isère, and has everything from gentle greens to steep off-piste, so it’s a solid pick for mixed-ability groups.
Beginners can learn the basics on the nursery slopes near Val Claret and Le Lac, while more experienced skiers can tackle descents of more than 1,000m from the top of the Grande Motte glacier back to the resort centre.
There are five purpose-built villages to choose from in Tignes.
To be in the heart of the action, there’s a vibrant après scene in Le Lac and Val Claret.
For something more laid-back there’s the quieter Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières area
Crystal Ski Holidays (020 8610 3123) offers a week’s half-board holiday at the three-star Hotel Les Brevieres, Tignes Les Brevieres from £1,288 per person when booked online (based on two sharing), flights from London Gatwick to Chambery and transfers (price given is for departure on 2nd April 2022). Direct flights available from all major UK airports.
OBERGURGL, AUSTRIA
Up at 1,930m, Obergurgl’s one of the highest villages in the Alps and has one of the longest ski seasons anywhere in Austria.
The centuries-old village was around long before the lifts arrived, so it has an authentic alpine feel with wooden chalets clustered around an 18th-century church.
The 122km ski area has snowsure beginner areas, tree-lined trails and wide-open pistes that are good for intermediates.
It’s also known for having quiet slopes and an excellent ski school, so it’s one of the best resorts for families.
The Top Express gondola allows you to explore the slopes around the neighbouring hamlet of Hochgurgl.
To really make the most of the lift pass, take the free bus to Sölden, which has two glaciers in its ski area.
Crystal Ski Holidays (020 8610 3123) offers a week’s half-board holiday at the four-star Hotel Alpenaussicht from £1,652 per person when booked online (based on two sharing), flights from Edinburgh to Innsbruck and transfers (price given is for departure on 2nd April 2022). Direct flights available from all major UK airports.
VAL THORENS, FRANCE
It is Europe’s highest ski resort so you can expect great spring snow.
The village is at 2,300m, and the lifts go to over 3,000m.
It’s part of the huge 3 Valleys ski area, which has 600km of pistes and four glaciers.
It has everything from gentle greens next to the village centre to steep moguls on the Cîme de Caron black run.
Once you’re done for the day, there’s the famous après ski bar, La Folie Douce, for a carnival-themed party on the panoramic terrace.
Spring events include Jazz à Val Thorens and Festival’Tho, where the resort hosts international musicians and DJs to close out the season.
Crystal Ski Holidays (020 8610 3123) offers a week’s self-catering holiday at the three-star Le Chamois D’Or Apartments, Val Thorens from £894 per person when booked online (based on two sharing), flights from Manchester to Geneva and transfers (price given is for departure on 2nd April 2022).
