Gold, Silver and Bronzes for GB at Paralympics

It was a successful weekend for Team GB in Beijing as The Games got underway with further medals on Monday. The Russian team has arrived back in Moscow after being thrown out due to the invasion of Ukraine.

The latest medals for GB are of the bronze variety and came on Monday – Day Three of the Games.

On Sunday Neil Simpson took gold in the men’s visually-impaired super-G skiing event.

He said it was “almost indescribable” after he put in the performance of his life.

The 19-year-old Scot was guided by brother Andrew, 21.

“We went in with a clear game plan and it worked out pretty well,” said Neil.

“We put it all down on the line and really went for it and I’m just very happy with the performance – it felt good.

“Andrew was shouting and screaming. I said, ‘Yeah, maybe a podium’. It’s just that wait. It’s such a high – it’s almost indescribable.”

Earlier in the day on Sunday Menna Fitzpatrick and her guide Gary Smith took silver in the women’s race.

Fitzpatrick, 23, said she was “proud” as she won the fifth Paralympic medal of her career, cementing her place as the nation’s most successful Winter Paralympian.

“To be here at all is a great achievement, but then to stand up on that podium is absolutely amazing,” she said. “I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together.

“We went out to ski well and build on the day before and we are super, super happy.”

On Saturday Millie Knight and her guide Brett Wild won bronze in the Women’s Downhill Visually Impaired.

Knight, from Canterbury is competing at her third Paralympic Games.

”The feelings haven’t really sunk in, there are so many thoughts and emotions going through my head,” she said after the event.

“I feel like I’m on cloud nine and I just genuinely can’t believe that this is happening to us.

“Crossing the line with a smile on my face was our number one goal – we genuinely didn’t believe we were at the level that would get us a medal. This bronze is something very special.

“It’s unbelievable to be here competing especially with all the difficulties going on at the moment. I feel very grateful that we can compete but obviously my thoughts go out to all the Ukrainians.”

According to the Russian state news agency, TASS, the Russian Paralympic athletes has arrived nack in Moscow.

There were 71 athletes due to take part.

The International Paralympic Committee banned athletes from Russia and Belarus from competing at the Games.

The U-turn came after threats of boycotts from National Paralympic Committees forced the organisation to change their initial decision.
