Seven of the Best Mountain Restaurants in Tirol

PlanetSKI is currently touring the Tirol in an extended trip. So we thought we’d ask the Tirol Tourist Office for a few recommendations for restaurants. Here is their response.

ST. JOHANN
Angerer Alm, St. Johann in Tirol
The Angerer Alm is the oldest farm in the ski resort of St. Johann.
This luxury hut next to the Harschbichlbahn cable car is run by mother-and-daughter duo Annemarie and Katharina Foidl.
Both are not only outstanding cooks but also wine experts.
The rustic dining room has a fireplace and meals can be enjoyed on the terrace in nice weather.
The rooms are cosy and traditional and guests can access the Angerer Alm either by cable car or on skis.
It uses products from local suppliers, ingredients produced by farmers in the region, local venison and herbs from their Alpine garden.
A good wine from the wine cellar must not be missed.
In the winter time, the Angerer Alm is only accessible via the gondola lift. The last lift leaves before 16:00.
SKI JUWEL
Sigwart’s Tiroler Weinstuben, Brixlegg
Not on the mountain, but we feel it deserves a mention…and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Ski Juwel area.
It was founded in 1774 on the road to the Alpbachtal valley.
Farmers, craftsmen, travellers and traders met here.
Anton Sigwart bought the house in 1850 and in 1858 and created a lasting memento by having a fountain hewn out of rock that stands outside the house to this day.
Many generations have shaped this house and have inspired its dedication to traditional Tirolean cuisine with an “elegant, contemporary expression”.
Only the best, fresh, local produce is used by the kitchen team.
Since 1985 Sigwart’s Tiroler Weinstuben are Gault Millau listed and in the A la Carte restaurant guide.
Every year anonymous tests reconfirm the consistent top quality.
Sigwart’s Tiroler Weinstuben is registered as one of the 200 best restaurants in Austria and listed in the best 25 in North and East Tirol.
SKIWELT
Umadum Stubn – Gipfelalm Hohe Salve
The Umadum Stubn is the highest revolving restaurant in Austria.
It’s motto is: “Revolve – See – Enjoy”.
An amazing view of 73 three-thousand metre peaks awaits you.
In a cosy atmosphere with rustic wooden decor, diners can enjoy delicious dishes and specialities.
OETZTAL
Ice Q Gourmet Restaurant, Sölden
The gourmet restaurant ice Q awarded with two toques by Gault & Millau is perched 3,048m above sea level.
Its stylish lounge and panoramic terrace resemble a film set in itself: Experience the spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of the Ötztal mountains from the all-glass restaurant area.
It is little wonder that James Bond location scouts saw this jaw-dropping scenery as a suitable shooting spot for Spectre.
Featuring innovative Alpine cuisine set against the backdrop of the stunning Austrian Alps, it really is a unique dining experience.
ISCHGL
Juler’s Stuba – off the mountain
The Juler’s Restaurant in Ischgl is a place where gourmet food and outstanding service fuse.
It creates an unforgettable dining experience with some of the finest ingredients from the local region.
This à-la-carte restaurant in the Hotel Solaria is a hotspot for foodies who know their stuff and appreciate the care and attention to detail given to every dish by its kitchen team.
INNSBRUCK
Gourmetrestaurant Schaufelspitz, Stubai
Everyone that appreciates extraordinary cuisine during a ski break should definitely check out Restaurant Schaufelspitze at the Eisgrat mountain station at 2,900 metres above sea level.
The restaurant markets itself with the claim of being “the highest award-winning restaurant in the Alps”.
It’s a slogan backed up by its two “Hauben” and 15 points in the Gault-Millau-Guide 2016.
The Schaufelspitz has a welcoming interior with an open fire, offering space for 55 guests. The adjoining sundeck complements this with additional seating for 50 people.
ZILLERTAL
Since 1988 the Schneekarhütte has been owned by the Family Bair on the top of the ski area of Mayrhofen at 2,250m.
The focus is also to bring local dishes and ingredients to the food menu.
The family Bair has also started with the highest built wine cellar in Austria, to offer a great selection from the new and old wine world, as fine selected Champagne from small wineries in France.
In the year 2012 the building was rebuilt.
Seven of ten rooms are individually designed by local artists for example, high rated materials and great ideas.
The spa area allows the perfect combination after skiing, to have a great day at the mountain.
At nights, for the overnight guests, it will be a delicious, unique evening with a fine five dishes dinner and being the first at the slopes in the morning.
