Another Alpine Glacier Resort Calls Off Summer Skiing

The Molltaler glacier in Austria has announced it will not open this year. Earlier this month Val d’Isere said its glacier will remain shut.

Molltaler made the announcement in a post on social media.

“Unfortunately, there is no ski operation this summer season,” the glacier resort said.

“But we hope to be able to start the next winter season as early as possible,” it added.

No reason has been given for not opening.

Val d’Isere blamed its closure this summer on poor snow conditions.

The Molltaler glacier is one of a handful of ski areas in Austria that had been able to offer summer skiing in recent years.

Snow conditions have generally deteriorated in the glacier resorts over the years as climate change takes its toll.

Hintertux and Kitzsteinhorn in Austria are currently open, along with Les2Alpes in France.

Zermatt in Switzerland and Val Senales in Italy are also open.

There has been a decline in the number of European glacier areas that open in the summer months and they tend to be open for shorter periods.
