Zermatt Re-Opens for Skiing and Snowboarding

The Swiss resort that is normally open year-round closed its glacier ski area this summer. It was a symbol of the impact of climate change. Val Senales in Italy has also re-opened with Soelden in Austria set to fire up some lifts on its glacier at the weekend. UPDATED

Today its slopes are open again after some recent fresh snow and cold temperatures.

It announced the news of its re-opening on its social media page.

The snow park remains closed but otherwise it is looking in pretty good shape.

The area closed on July 29th after high temperatures, a lack of snow and rain.

Winter is coming folks!

The Italian glacier resort of Val Senales has also re-opened with Soelden in the Tirol in Aistria set to start its autumn season on Friday 23rd September.

It has been a dreadful summer for glacier skiing.

All summer ski areas in the Alps closed to the general public, except for Hintertux in the Tirol in Austria.

Hintertux too has seen some of the recent snowfall.

Across the Alps it has looked bleak this summer.

Zermatt is scheduled to co-host the first cross border World Cup races in October and November.

“We remain confident that nothing will stand in the way of the first-ever staging of the “Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening” at the end of October and beginning of November,” said Markus Hasler, CEO of Zermatt Bergbahnen.

On Tuesday there is a planned inspection of the current situation on the new ‘Gran Becca’ race course.
