Skiing in Scotland

Scotland’s ski resorts have enjoyed a strong start to winter as some resorts in the Alps and Pyrenees struggled for snow. The weather is now changing. UPDATED

Scotland has five ski resorts.

  • The Lecht
  • Glenshee
  • Glencoe
  • Nevis Range
  • Cairngorm

They’ve seen some new snow but, as can happen in Scotland, disruptive winds have been causing problems.

Cairngorm Mountain resort is closed for skiing and snowboarding.

“Sorry everyone, due to the current very high winds which are forecast to increase even further, we are closed for Snowsports today,” the resort said this morning.

“On the bright side, forecasts are suggesting some pretty heavy snow fall later tonight and all day tomorrow!

“We will update later today on the prospects for tomorrow.”

Glencoe managed to open up to the top this morning with winds blowing up to 30mph.

“Best of the weather will be in the morning as it’s due to turn wet and mild this afternoon. Will be a short window for “freshies” this morning😀,” the resort said.

PlanetSKI’s Scotland reporter, Rod Fraser, was out skiing earlier.

“We skied on Hogmanay at the Lecht, it was blue skies and plenty of snow cover,” said Rod.

“There was a good dump on New Year’s Day but it’s been pretty warm since then and stormy for a couple of days.  There’s a bit more snow in the forecast.”

“We have a base down, hopefully getting topped up through next week.”

The recent snowy conditions in Scotland contrasts to some poor recent snow in parts of the Alps, but that is set to change.

The Lecht Ski Centre in Aberdeenshire, says business was booming over the Xmas and New Year holiday period.

On 2nd  January it so busy they had to stop selling tickets for only the second time in 45 years.

“I don’t want to gloat too much, but yes it’s nice that we’ve got snow,” said Pieter du Pon, chairman of the Lecht Ski Company.

“We look at a 10-day forecast. In a week’s time in could disappear. We were very lucky this Christmas period.

“It comes and goes. We’ll see how the rest of the season goes.”

He was speaking to the BBC.
