There has been so much snow in the US state that some resorts have plentiful snow and have extended their closing dates. We have spent a few fabulous days in San Francisco and now it’s time to hit the slopes.
Regular readers will know that we are in California.
We previewed our visit here:
And updated from the streets of San Francisco:
Now it’s time to end the tourist stuff and head to the ski slopes of Palisades Tahoe and then on to Mammoth.
The ski road trip part of the visit begins.
We decided on taking the slightly longer route to Palisades Tahoe, leaving the city over the Golden Gate bridge.
It is the most visited tourist site in the city and known throughout the world.
Driving over it should be a treat.
I say ‘should be a treat’ because this is what it looked like as we approached.
Oh dear.
A thick sea-mist had rolled in off the Pacific and visibiilty was, er, limited to say the least.
It began to lift a bit as we crossed.
Then as we completed the crossing we stopped to look back.
And the views to San Francisco itself?
Simply stunning.
Next up on the way to the ski slopes we drove past some of the vineyards in Napa Valley.
With fabulous views to the side.
This ski road trip is getting underway folks.
After the Californian state capital, Sacremento, the views became better and better as we headed into the mountains where all the snow has fallen this winter.
We were heading to South Lake Tahoe and evidence of the huge snow was in evidence.
With the river bursting with the melt water coming off the moutains.
South Lake Tahoe is home to the ski resort of Heavenly, though it has now closed.
Here’s the famous gun-barrel lift and mogul slope.
Still covered in snow.
The town is partly in California and partly in Nevada.
In Nevada gambling is legal, so on one side of the state are the huge 24-hour gambling hotels.
While on the other it is somewhat different.
The drive round Lake Tahoe to Palisades Tahoe takes your breath away.
Next stop the ski resort of Palisades Tahoe and one of the reasons we have come half-way round the world.
Spring skiing in California in the resort that bills itself as the ‘Spring Skiing Capital’.
We’ll be putting that claim to the test over the next few days as we continue our California ski road trip.
Seems the locals are buying into it.
