Snow Finally Falls in Australia

Resorts opened last weekend, the King’s Weekend, with some only offering magic carpets and beginner slopes. Others didn’t run any lifts at all. Now things are changing. NEW & UPDATED

The snow was forecast and now it has fallen.

The latest resorts to open are Falls Creek and Mt Hotham that fired up some lifts on Friday 16th.

There’s been 27 cm of snow at Mount Hotham, 26 cm at Falls Creek, 20 cm at Perisher and 8 cm at Mount Buller.

“A cold front moved through parts of south-east Australia overnight, bringing a dusting of fresh snow in the Alpine parts of Victoria and southern New South Wales,” said the Australia Bureau of Meterorology.

“It doesn’t look like the next front will bring much snow this week, but we might be lining up for the next burst of snow late in the weekend.”

Sunday could see a bit more snow and all eyes will now be on the temperatures to see if the snow remains, or melts.

The ski resorts have taken to social media, with more than a sigh of relief, to declare that winter has started.

Perisher and Mt Buller did manage to open last weekend as planned, but with little open.

Thredbo in New South Wales remains closed for skiing.

Earlier PlanetSKI reported on the lack of snow as resorts opened last weekend.

In New Zealand things are looking much better.

Mt Hutt was the first resort to open last weekend.

Others are set to follow suit.

Here at PlanetSKI we will be keeping an eye on how the ski season develops Down Under.
