Skiing at Mammoth Mountain Finally Ends

The resort in California shut its slopes on Sunday 6th August. Only twice in the resort’s 69-year history has there been enough snow to offer skiing into August. UPDATED

It was the final weekend for the die-hard skiers and snowboarders.

Check out a couple of video reports on proceedings:

Last winter saw 18.1m of snow fall and it is still around 1m deep at the summit of the mountain and 30cms at the  Main Lodge at the base of the main ski area.

The ski area was initially expected to close at the end of July.

It’s is the third-latest closing date in the resort’s history and the closing period saw a famous face in the resort for some race training.

Lifts were open from 7:30 to noon — after mid-day the snow became too slushy.

The resort has been open for 275 consecutive days.

“The numbers just sort of speak for themselves. “It’s been a big year,” said the resort.

Mammoth Mountain has already announced that it plans to re-open on November 10th after the briefest of off-seasons.

Regular readers will recall that PlanetSKI was in Mammoth Mountain back in May, after the European ski season ended.
